Your resume can be discarded in a matter of seconds. Have you ever thought about that?

Businesses usually receive a lot of interest for open positions, so there is quite a bit of competition ahead of you. If you’re looking to separate yourself from the rest of the pack, your resume has to pop.

The team here at Carter Recruiting and Associates has years of experience when it comes to studying resumes and helping people all across the state of Arkansas write theirs. We know what it takes to impress a potential employer.

So we’ve decided to give you 6 tips to help you blow the competition out of the water.

1) Keep It Professional

This one seems obvious, but you’d be shocked at how many people neglect this part of their resume. It’s a business document, so it’s imperative that you keep it professional. Stick to the facts, and send your information through a professional and simple e-mail address.

2) Make It Targeted

Tailor your resume for the specific company you’re applying for. When a business opens a resume, they’re looking for experience that applies to them. They want to see how YOU can help their brand. Take out any information that does not apply to the job.

3) Self-Promote

Don’t be afraid to talk about yourself! Companies want to learn about you and your accomplishments and experience. Be sure to self promote yourself and talk about what separates you from the other candidates.

4) Remember: Quality Over Quantity

Your resume is not your life story. You don’t need to list every little thing you’ve ever done. Only focus on the relevant positions that you’ve worked, along with relevant accomplishments.

5) Keep It Simple

A lot of people are under the impression that they need to use a lot of crazy fonts, colors and graphics to stand out. In reality, that serves as nothing but a distraction for your potential employer. They don’t care about how well you can design a resume. They care about your qualifications. Be sure to keep it simple, and focus on your relevant experience.

6) Use Hobbies To Your Advantage

This is an overlooked tip, because some might not see it as relevant, but your employers want to know what you’re like outside of the office. Are you participating in productive activities? For example, if you run marathons, that shows that you’re dedicated and determined. That translates to productivity in the workplace.
