When you first start a working from home job, there is a period of getting used to the fact that you’re working in the same place where you relax. There are temptations all around the house, everything from the couch, the TV, the kitchen, and the bed. When the work gets hard, all you want to do is just get under the sheets and take a break for awhile.
It’s crucial to find a way to minimize distractions, but there is also a way to do this to make it fun and enjoyable for yourself. The team here at Carter Recruiting and Associates has noticed the rapid uptick in working from home jobs and we have filled several work-from-home positions over the past year, so we thought we’d share some of the best productivity hacks to get the job done.
1) Set up a home office
Yes, you’re at home, but it’s critical for you to set up a space that is geared towards being productive. You need a designated area to take care of your business. You don’t need to work from bed or on the couch, because eventually you’ll find yourself relaxing and taking more breaks than you need.
2) Take regular breaks
Dr. K Anders Ericsson claims that pausing work every 90 minutes and taking a break renews your energy and gives you a fresh outlook on the task at hand, as we best work in 90-minute intervals. Once you’ve accomplished a big task for the day, reward yourself with a quick 15-minute break. Take a walk around the block, sit outside on the patio, or give your pets some love. If you take some time to briefly connect with nature or things that make you happy, it will increase your productivity throughout the rest of the day.
3) Eat foods that make you feel energized
Your diet is a huge factor into your energy throughout the day. Munch on healthy snacks throughout the day to keep yourself alert and increase your mental stamina. Healthy snacks such as celery, grapes, carrots, dried fruits, or nuts are great snack options to keep near your desk. Be sure to also regularly drink water while you snack as well.
4) Write out a schedule
Winging it every single day will NOT work. You will eventually fall behind, as a lack of structure only leads to a loss in productivity. Take note of the times you are the most productive throughout the day and create a schedule around those hours. Write it out and put the schedule in a place where you can see it. This will make it much easier to stick to the schedule and hold yourself accountable.
5) Tap into your ultradian rhythm
When you achieve the heightened state of focus and productivity, you must know of your ultradian cycle is. As previously mentioned, we usually work best in 90-minute increments, but each person’s ultradian rhythm is different. The next time you’re in the zone and getting a task done, notice how long it took and how long you were in a heightened state of productivity. If you’re able to control your ultradian rhythm, you’re going to become a working machine.
6) Invest in a stand-up desk
Being hunched over in a chair all day long is terrible for your back, and lying down on the couch is only going to ruin your productivity. The best solution is to get a stand-up desk, because not only will it give you a little change of scenery, but it’ll also improve your focus.
7) Fill your workspace with plants
Scientific studies have shown that have a lot of green in your work space will increase productivity. This is because plants are able to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, which gets rid of air pollution. Plus, plants are pleasant to look at and just have in your general area.
8) Use a timing app to keep yourself on track
It’s not easy to work and focus, while also keeping track of time. Watching the clock will only hurt your focus in the long run, so it’s best to download a timing app to do that extra work for you. We recommend checking out Tomato Timer to achieve the best results.
